Lawnside Lower School in Biggleswade opened in January 1959 with 252 pupils. Despite having 6 classrooms, a new room was needed within a month. The contract for the school to be built was £5000 and included a "modern" kitchen.

The official opening took place in December 1959 so that the children could take part. The school was declared to be "one of the finest schools of its kind built since the war". The children were told how lucky they were to be there and couldn't be reminded of this enough.

Over its 50 years Lawnside has had many clubs, including a school band. The parents have put on pantomimes for the children and held numerous Fun Days. They have entered the Biggleswade Carnival many times.

The school gained new classrooms, which have now moved forward with technology: there are no more blackboards. The playground and grounds have grown and changed with the planting of hedges and trees.

Lawnside will be celebrating its 50 years during May. There is an open evening on Tuesday 12th May from 6pm for parents and former members of staff. The children are having a special day on Thursday 14th May.
