Plymouth Council Survey
A recent study, conducted by Plymouth Council, surveyed the internet habits of 423 under-fives, with an average age of four.
It found 305 used the internet every day, often unsupervised.
Whilst the survey indicated that the most popular sites were CBeebies and Peppa Pig,Professor Tanya Byron, a clinical psychologist, said leaving a five-year-old unsupervised on the internet is equivalent to “abandoning a kid in a shopping centre for a couple of hours”.

E-Safeguarding Tool
Rapidly developing information and communication technologies (ICT) are exciting and motivating learning tools through which learning and teaching can be greatly enhanced. However, the use of ICT and particularly online technologies do present schools with some serious challenges and risks.
The NEN E-Safeguarding Tool (a joint development between Central Bedfordshire, E2BN, NorthernGrid and YHGfL) is an online application that can help senior managers to ensure that ICT is used safely and responsibly and that risks related to ICT use are properly managed.
The audit considers Roles and Responsibilities and E-Safeguarding Procedures, including;
Risk Assessment
Data Classification
Access Control
Use of Systems
Password Policies
Incident Reporting
Remote Access
Technical Security
The audit assumes a non-technical audience and ideally should be carried out by the members of the school's Senior Leadership Team
Simply click on the E-Safeguarding Tool and answer each question as it is presented to you. As you answer each question the system will suggest the next steps for improving your schools E-Safeguarding procedures and where appropriate direct you to further sources of information and help. You can stop the audit at any point, save your answers and resume the audit later on. When you have completed the audit you can print out your answers along with the recommended next steps.

Facebook Launches New CLICKCEOP Button
Every Young Person Needs This !
If you work with children and young adults you will know that many of them use social networking sites.
This new, free application in Facebook is designed to keep young people safe while they are having fun networking online.
ClickCEOP is a new 'app' launched on Monday 12 July which links the young user directly from their Facebook profile to help, advice and reporting facilities of the Child Exploitation and Online Protection CEOP Centre - the police agency set up to tackle child abuse.
By adding the app, young people and parents can get support from CEOP on a range of issues - viruses, hacking, dealing with bullying online and they can report someone who is acting inappropriately towards them online.

OfSTED - The Safe Use of New Technologies Report
This report is based on evidence from a small-scale survey carried out between April and July 2009 in 35 maintained schools in England. It evaluates the extent to which the schools taught pupils to adopt safe and responsible practices in using new technologies, and how they achieved this. It also assesses the extent and quality of the training the schools provided for their staff. It responds to the Byron Review report, Safer children in a digital world.

E-Safety Lessons to Become Compulsory
The DCSF has announced that e-safety is to become a formal part of the curriculum for all school-age learners from September 2011. Already a part of the secondary curriculum, e-safety will be compulsory in primary schools from this date. The Government expects that e-safety issues will be raised in a wide variety of relevant curriculum areas, especially in PSHEE, not just in lessons designated as 'ICT'. (PSHE stands for personal, social, health and economic education.)
This development should be a natural progression for schools as part of the safeguarding agenda. Ofsted already requires inspectors to consider internet safety and related issues within its Evaluation schedule of judgements. This states that schools should encourage learners to 'adopt safe and responsible practices and deal sensibly with risk, for example... [when] using the internet.' Schools should have policies that cover all aspects of internet safety, cyber-bullying and appropriate use of communications technologies, and these policies should be seen to be implemented.
This announcement is part of package of measures drawn up in conjunction with UKCCIS (the UK Council for Child Internet Safety), including a new campaign with the slogan 'Zip it, Block it, Flag it'.
